The following scientific study,
published in a peer reviewed scientific journal in 1991, is the best evidence
that pine shavings are not safe as bedding for small animals. This study found that mice kept on pine
shavings had enlarged livers, abnormal immune responses, and reduced
reproductive rates. When mice were
given a choice of beddings, they avoided pine shavings whenever possible.
