Name The Non-Profit Contest

In June 2002 we celebrated The Rat Fan Club’s 10th anniversary!  The goal of the RFC has been to promote rats as pets and educate rat owners on the proper care of rats.  We have made a lot of progress toward this goal, and the RFC will continue to follow this goal for hopefully many years to come.

Now it’s time for rats to be treated with the same respect as other pets by pet care professionals.

To help with the goal of educating: veterinarians, people who work for humane societies and shelters, and pet shop staff, we decided to form a non-profit corporation.

A non-profit corporation will make us eligible to apply for grants from foundations, and individuals who donate to our cause will be able to deduct their contributions from their income taxes.  The new non-profit will not replace The Rat Fan Club but will work alongside it.

In February 2002, we sent an email survey to the members for whom we have email addresses and asked them to vote for a name for the new non-profit organization.  The vote ended in a 3-way tie!  We added 2 new names and sent out a second survey, and that vote resulted in a 4-way tie.  Instead of holding another vote, we thought it would be fun to have a NAME THE CORPORATION CONTEST instead!  We thought the contest would also be an appropriate way to kick-off a fund-raising campaign.

We also had a contest for a logo for the new non-profit, and/or any design ideas for t-shirts, both for the new non-profit and for the 10th anniversary of The Rat Fan Club.  The deadline for the contests was June 1st 2002.

The winning name for the non-profit organization was the Rat Assistance & Teaching Society (R.A.T.S.)  In May 2003 the new organization received its official non-profit status.  Donations made to R.A.T.S. are now tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.  Make donation checks to R.A.T.S. and send them to 857 Lindo Lane, Chico CA 95973.  Or you can go to the R.A.T.S. website at www.petrats.org and make a donation by PayPal!

T-shirts for Sale!

Here are the winners of the logo and t-shirts contests.

The winner of the non-profit t-shirt design is Jussi Maugle of Upper Black Eddy, PA with the design below.  This design fills the front of the shirt.  These t-shirts come in both white and ash and are available in adult sizes small, medium, large, x-large and 3X.  The 3X shirts are $18.95, and the other sizes are $16.95.   California residents add 7.25% tax.  The shipping cost is $4 for the first shirt and $1 for each additional shirt.  Make checks out to the Rat Assistance & Teaching Society  or R.A.T.S. and send to 857 Lindo Lane, Chico CA 95973.

The winner of the 10th Anniversary Rat Fan Club t-shirt design is Johanna Mac Leod of Sunnyvale, CA with the design below.  It is a very large color file, so you need to be patient while it downloads.  These t-shirts are white 100% cotton and are on sale for $12.95 for adult small, medium, and x-large sizes.  3X sizes are on sale for $14.95.  We are sold out of the adult large size shirts.  California residents add 7.25% tax.  The shipping cost is $4 for the first shirt and $1 for each additional shirt.  Make checks out to the Rat Fan Club and send to 857 Lindo Lane, Chico CA 95973.
